Tranquility Redefined: Veranda Tamarin Hotel & Spa Unveils “Sérénité Under the Stars” Wellness Experience
Nestled between the turquoise kiss of the Indian Ocean and the lush, whispering canopy of coastal forest, the Veranda Tamarin Hotel & Spa has long been known as a boutique sanctuary on the west coast of Mauritius. With its bohemian charm, eco-conscious soul, and rhythmic energy of surf and sega music in the air, the hotel has captured the hearts of travelers from across the globe. But now, Veranda Tamarin is not just offering relaxation — it’s offering transcendence.
Earlier this month, the hotel quietly launched a new signature wellness experience that is already being hailed by its first guests as “transformational,” “dreamlike,” and “unlike anything else on the island.”
Welcome to “Sérénité Under the Stars.”
A New Chapter in Holistic Luxury
“Sérénité Under the Stars” is the latest addition to the hotel’s celebrated Seven Senses Wellness Program, a framework designed to engage the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of well-being through immersive, culturally rooted experiences. This new offering, however, is its most ambitious yet — a curated overnight ritual combining private open-air spa treatments, guided meditation, stargazing, sound therapy, and a sleep sanctuary set in the heart of the Tamarin Valley.
“The idea was born during the pandemic,” says Camille Ravin, Director of Guest Experience at Veranda Tamarin. “When everything was uncertain, people started turning inward. There was a deep yearning not just for travel, but for peace — a new kind of serenity. We wanted to honor that and craft an experience where our guests could reconnect with themselves, and with nature, in a profound way.”
The result is something truly unique: part spa retreat, part moonlit ceremony, and entirely unforgettable.
The Journey Begins: From the Sea to the Valley
Guests begin their Sérénité experience in the late afternoon, after a brief consultation with a dedicated Wellness Curator. From there, they are taken by electric jeep inland — away from the palm-lined beaches and into the golden-green folds of the Tamarin Valley, a private estate area protected by the hotel’s conservation partners.
At the heart of this valley is the “Lune Élevée” Pavilion — a circular bamboo-and-glass structure built with sustainable materials, half-sunken into the landscape so that it seems to grow from the earth itself. It’s here that the transformation begins.
Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a cooling towel infused with ylang-ylang and vetiver essential oils — scents deeply rooted in Mauritian culture. A light herbal tisane made with wild lemongrass, hibiscus, and bael fruit sets the tone for an evening of introspection and restoration.
“We didn’t want this to feel like a typical luxury spa,” says Dr. Kavi Soondur, Ayurvedic consultant for Veranda Resorts. “It’s more like a ceremony — a sacred moment you gift yourself.”
A Ritual of Release
The first phase of the experience is called “Purification.” Here, guests participate in a symbolic cleansing ceremony. Sitting on woven mats around a slow-burning herbal fire, they are guided by a local wellness practitioner through a gentle breathing exercise known as nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing), followed by a short journaling prompt meant to “release the burdens of the mind.”
Then comes the signature Mineral Rain Ritual: a private, open-air hydrotherapy experience in a carved-stone shower garden. Warm mineral-rich water flows over the body while curated essential oils — tamanu, clove, and blue chamomile — are applied in a flowing massage style known as rasa abhyanga.
“The feeling is like washing away everything that doesn’t serve you,” one guest wrote in the experience book. “You come out lighter.”
The Healing Sound of Silence
As dusk turns into twilight, the second phase, “Immersion,” begins. Guests recline on a canopied outdoor bed, swathed in light cotton linens, surrounded by aromatic torches that deter insects and add an amber glow to the surroundings. A sound healer then begins a live performance using crystal singing bowls, ocean drums, and a handmade rav vast drum tuned to 432 Hz — a frequency believed to resonate with natural harmony.
Guests are not encouraged to “sleep” yet. Rather, they drift in and out of a lucid, meditative state, assisted by a custom breathing track and guided visualization audio composed by local artist Anoushka Mahadeo, blending ambient music with traditional Sega melodies.
“Most people cry,” says Camille. “Not because they’re sad, but because something opens. It’s very moving to witness.”
Sleeping Among the Stars
The pinnacle of the evening is the Celestial Sleep Chamber: a transparent, climate-controlled dome set up on a raised wooden platform under the open sky. Designed for two guests or solo travelers, the chamber includes:
- A memory foam, anti-gravity mattress infused with aloe and charcoal
- Hypoallergenic silk linens scented with orange blossom
- A personalized aromatherapy diffuser
- A binaural sound pillow for sleep-inducing frequencies
- A telescope for moon and planet observation
- A journal, pen, and affirmation deck for morning reflection
“No detail is overlooked,” says one guest from Switzerland. “I was afraid I wouldn’t fall asleep outdoors, but I’ve never slept more deeply in my life.”
Guests report vivid dreams, restful sleep, and a strong sense of emotional clarity upon waking.
Dawn Awakening
As the sun begins to rise, guests are gently awakened by the sound of soft bamboo chimes and a sunrise tea service: wild ginger, honey, and cinnamon tea served with a bowl of fresh tropical fruit and coconut yogurt.
A short sun salutation yoga session takes place on the open deck, followed by a foot cleansing ritual and a gratitude circle — optional for those traveling solo or privately.
The final touch is a small seedling — native to the valley — gifted to each guest to plant either in the property’s “Garden of Intentions” or to take home. It’s a symbolic way to carry the transformation forward.
Sustainability and Community
“Sérénité Under the Stars” is more than a luxury product — it is a socio-environmental initiative. A percentage of each booking supports the Tamarin Forest Regeneration Project, a community-led reforestation program co-managed by Veranda Resorts and local NGOs.
The experience also features collaborations with local artisans, herbalists, and wellness practitioners, ensuring that each component is authentically rooted in Mauritian heritage.
“We believe true luxury is meaningful,” says Dr. Kavi. “This is about healing, but also about giving back — to the land and to the people.”
Who Is It For?
While originally designed for couples, the experience is now open to solo travelers, friends, and even small private groups. It’s particularly popular among:
- Burned-out professionals seeking retreat
- Couples celebrating anniversaries or honeymoons
- Wellness influencers and digital detoxers
- Travelers on a spiritual journey
Each Sérénité experience is fully private and curated based on guest preferences, including dietary needs, physical sensitivities, and spiritual inclinations. For guests with mobility concerns, modified experiences can be arranged in a more accessible setting on the main resort grounds.
The Verdict: Is It Worth It?
Priced at €480 per person (or €860 for two), the overnight experience includes:
- Private roundtrip transfer to the valley site
- Full wellness itinerary
- Spa treatments
- Sound healing
- Overnight luxury sleep chamber
- All meals and herbal infusions
- Morning yoga and tea service
- Sustainable gift and tree-planting ceremony
While not inexpensive, early guests have described it as “worth every euro,” especially compared to similar wellness retreats in Bali or Costa Rica that cost twice as much — without the ecological stewardship or intimate cultural connection.
Booking and Availability
Due to the personalized nature of the experience and the ecological preservation of the site, only three Sérénité sessions are offered per week, with a two-person maximum each night. Bookings are recommended at least six weeks in advance, especially during peak seasons (November–January, June–August).
The experience can be booked via the Veranda Tamarin website or through approved luxury travel advisors.
A New Standard in Wellness Travel
As the travel industry continues its shift toward authenticity, sustainability, and deeper emotional fulfillment, Veranda Tamarin’s “Sérénité Under the Stars” sets a new benchmark for what it means to truly rest, restore, and reconnect.
In a world buzzing with noise and urgency, this quiet, moonlit corner of Mauritius offers something radical in its simplicity: peace.
And sometimes, that’s all we need.
